I’m Stephana Cherak, a Perinatal Pharmacologist. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Metabolic Biochemistry from the University of Calgary & a MSc in Pharmacology from the University of Alberta, where I completed my research as a member of the Women & Children’s Health Research Institute. I am currently in Doctoral studies at the University of Calgary in the Developmental Psychobiology Lab & am an active member of the Canadian Society for Pharmacology & Therapeutics. I strive to develop preventative strategies for the improved health & long-term potential of mothers & newborn babies. Outside of the lab & sessions, I’m a competitive runner & volunteer in the community.
Okay, so tell me, what is pharmacology?
The ‘fetal programming’ hypothesis posits that changes in the fetal environment (e.g., hormonal) can alter the structure & function of developing biological systems. Children born to mothers with elevated levels of psychological distress &/or inadequate nutritional status are at an increased risk for poor birth & developmental outcomes. My past research examined how inadequate maternal nutritional status programs a greater susceptibility to weight gain & obesity in the offspring. Currently, I am investigating how experiences of psychological distress during pregnancy becomes embedded in children’s brain development, & to discover the linkages between maternal stress during pregnancy, infant brain development & child mental health.
There is a myriad of information surrounding what to eat, how to eat and when to eat. It’s not surprising that the majority of people feel overwhelmed and helpless when wanting to make the best food choices! I am here to guide you on a sustainable and individual relationship with nutrition – learn why a wholistic approach to nutrition makes us feel so good!
A pharmacological consultation provides the groundwork from which we grow together on your health journey. The topics that we cover and the resources provided are completely dependent on YOUR unique story, body and goals. My wholistic assessment will include gathering information about your health history, sleeping habits, digestion, energy, current food intake and any other relevant information. We will also review any recent lab work, medications and current supplementation. I deem every nuance and detail to be important in the illustration of optimal health. Our assessment will drive my custom-tailored action plan that can either be followed independently or together, should you wish to work with me beyond the initial consult.
I’d love to connect with you. Together with WHyyc, I’ll be seeing clients 1-on-1, as well as running workshops & lectures. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to learn how to connect or book an appointment!
