pharmacology is the branch of medicine concerned with the uses, effects, & modes of action of drugs. Where a drug can be broadly defined as any man-made, natural, or endogenous (from within body) molecule which exerts a biochemical or physiological effect on the cell, tissue, organ, or organism

Pharmacology has evolved over the years. Originally a scientific discipline that described the overt effects of biologically active molecules, pharmacology now explores the molecular mechanisms by which active molecules can cause biological effects. In the broadest sense, pharmacology is the study of how natural and synthetic agents affect biological systems. Pharmacological studies can determine the effects of active molecules upon subcellular, systemic, physiological or behavioral processes; focus on the treatment and prevention of diseases; or deal with the potential hazards of pesticides and herbicides.

Pharmacology is often described as a bridge science because it incorporates knowledge and skills from a number of basic science disciplines including physiology, biochemistry and cell and molecular biology. Pharmacologists are able to ‘translate’ such knowledge into the rational development of therapeutics. As a result of our multidisciplinary training, pharmacologists are able to offer a unique perspective in solving drug-, hormone- and chemical-related problems.

The interdisciplinary nature of the field, as well as the potential for the practical application of research, is what attracted me (Stephana) into becoming a pharmacologist!

There is a myriad of information surrounding what to eat, how to eat and when to eat. It’s not surprising that the majority of people feel overwhelmed and helpless when wanting to make the best food choices! I am here to guide you on a sustainable and individual relationship with nutrition – learn why a wholistic approach to nutrition makes us feel so good!

A pharmacological consultation provides the groundwork from which we grow together on your health journey. The topics that we cover and the resources provided are completely dependent on YOUR unique story, body and goals. My wholistic assessment will include gathering information about your health history, sleeping habits, digestion, energy, current food intake and any other relevant information. We will also review any recent lab work, medications and current supplementation. I deem every nuance and detail to be important in the illustration of optimal health. Our assessment will drive my custom-tailored action plan that can either be followed independently or together, should you wish to work with me beyond the initial consult.

Private pharmacology consultation services are not covered by Alberta Health Services. However, for many people the cost of accessing pharmacology consultation services can be offset through employee benefits or additional insurance coverage. The treatment “hour” is usually 50 minutes allowing 10 minutes from each hour for after-session notes & other services. Payment can be made by cash, cheque, or credit card. At the end of each session, clients are issued a receipt for pharmacology consultation services that may be used to obtain reimbursement from employee benefits or insurance company.

How many sessions you’ll need depends on the presenting concern, complexity, severity & duration, as well as your personal motivation for dealing with presenting concerns. For some issues people can experience significant improvement in only a few sessions.

Together, we can work together to estimate how many sessions you’ll require. However, ultimately, it’s your decision as to how many sessions you need, & clients are free to withdraw from services at any point.
